A little bit about myself.

My name is Steven Nydam and I find passion in improving the lives of others through design. I love talking with users and getting an understanding of what frustrates and motivates them - and then using these insights to transform their experience in the best way possible!

My goal is to learn something new each day such that I never become complacent with who I am. I believe there is immense value in challenging one’s self because in failing to do so you won’t ever realize your true potential.

When I’m not picking the brains of users and pushing pixels you can find me at the local climbing gym repeatedly falling off walls. If you’re lucky you might even see me with a Rubik’s cube in hand desperately trying to push my time below a minute!

My values

🔥 Passion is everything.

Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focussing on what excites you. Given that our time on this planet is finite, what good is not pursuing something you love? The fact is if you don’t love what you do, you won’t do it with much conviction. Time is precious, don’t waste it.

🙏 Remain humble.

Never believe you are above or below anyone. Keep a humble spirit. For this means that we are not on this earth to see how important we can become, but rather to see how much of a difference we can make in the lives of others.

🧠 Always be learning.

Complacency is a destination that I never want to arrive at. I see myself as a constant work in progress, often craving any sort of feedback that will help me grow. I’m constantly looking for ways to challenge myself (most recently in the form of a rubik’s cube) because I never want to feel like there exists no room for improvement.

❌ Embrace failure.

Missteps and roadblocks are inevitable. Instead of looking at them as a reason to stop innovating, see them as an opportunity to learn, pivot and go after your goals with a new perspective. I often try to look at failure through the lens of Winston Churchill, “Success is walking from failure to failure with no loss in enthusiasm.”

🎓 Education

In June 2021 I graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelors of Applied Science in Honours Systems Design Engineering - Co-operative Program.

Systems Design Engineering was a uniquely interdisciplinary department that exposed me to a wide complement of courses in the engineering sciences and design.

Over the course of my 5 year degree I learned how to design, iterate and manage complex systems over their life cycles. I also accumulated 2 years of practical work experience through a handful of co-operative work placements.
